Day 1 - Phnom Penh

We have finally arrived in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, after a long night of travelling. On our first flight to Singapore we were surprised by some of the best plane food we'd ever had. The chicken noodles were absolutely devine, although some thought it was a strange breakfast, it came with a side of fruit, a tub of yoghurt, juice and a heated bread roll. Just before we landed, we all had a laugh when Paige realised Cambodia and Vietnam were not in the same place. When we landed, for some people going through customs was a daunting yet exciting experience. We were greeted in Cambodia by a lovely man Kea and our local guide.

As soon as we stepped outside of those airport doors, we were shocked by how humid the weather was. We were all delighted to see a comfortable bus that has aircon, reclinable chairs and a foot rest. As we made our way through the city of Phnom Penh we got to do a bit of sight seeing. You get to encounter how these people live, the way they operate and communicate with each other. It also makes you realise and appreciate the life you have.

We reached our hotel, Town View, and we were all nicely greeted with a gesture of rose water. We all had the opportunity to have a rest and have a quick shower. Then we were back out and about having lunch, where we enjoyed a buffet of exotic food. A few people even tried fish eyes! After we finished eating, we went on a cyclo tour and we were briefly introduced to a range of people that drove us on modified trikes around the city where we got to see the Independence Monument. Our last stop was at the Royal Palace, where we saw the National Museum and the Silver Pagoda. We were all overwhelmed by the stories of what our local guide was telling us during our tour of the museum. He also discussed the importance of Buddhism to the Cambodian people.

It was incredibly hot all day and even though we were all drinking water, the exhaustion and heat was getting to us so we headed back to the hotel for a swim in our rooftop pool. We all witnessed Josh's rapidly wrinkling hands and had a good laugh at his expense.

Our day ended with us having a nice dinner at the Foreign Correspondents Club. Our meals were true to the culture and also exposed us to all of the different flavours in the one meal. Some of us ate dragon fruit as a dessert with their pandan ice. With all the energy left in us from such a long day, we decided to sing a couple of songs while in the bus, on the way home to the hotel. It was a great way to start off the tour.
